My relationship with BDO started back in 2004, when they offered me a very good bursary to study B.Acc at Stellenbosch University. I had a few interviews for bursaries at big auditing firms, but the moment I walked into BDO, I knew, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR ME.

I finished my B.Acc Honors Degree in 2008, did my first year Academic Articles at Stellenbosch University in 2009 and started my second year articles at BDO in January 2010. At first I was a bit worried about how I would cope, as I am already a second year Trainee, but with no audit experience. Now, a few months down the line, I know I had nothing to worry about! Before every audit and before you start sections, you are explained in detail what is expected of you, what you should do and why. And don’t be afraid to ask! Since starting at BDO I have gained a large amount of experience that cannot be replaced. I have worked on clients within various industries such as fishing, hotel, health care and mining but to name a few. This will allow me to enter into any industry with the necessary knowledge and experience should I wish to pursue other goals.

My seniors were always willing to train me and make sure that I develop as an auditor. This hands on training is the culture created in BDO to ensure personal growth of their employees. The personal attention is what allowed me to grow and develop into the auditor I am today.

Through this constant training and experience obtained as well as putting a lot of hours into my studies I was able to complete my B-compt degree through UNISA within 3 and a half years as well as passing my Honors degree and BOARD I the first time. The practical experience helped me in my studies and to understand it better.

My articles were completed in 2007 and I am still with BDO as I enjoy my work and the pleasant working environment. The staff all get along very well and work hard together as we take pride in what we do. At BDO we have the saying work hard and play hard.

It was a very big decision for me when I decided to work and study part-time. I was faced with the question of whether I would ever find time to study. When I was being recruited, the interviewer talked a lot about the importance of having a work-study balance.

I never actually thought I would be able to find that right balance but once I started working, I could immediately see that everyone here at BDO made an effort to help me get the right balance.
